Laws on the Road

The laws of the road are the rules that all road users must abide by. They are for cyclists and motorists to pay particular attention to, although they are meant for all road users.

The basic road rules are written in an agreement, internationally recognised under the authority of the UN and are in place to govern the actions taken between road users, and between road users and pedestrians.

Not all countries are bound to these laws and, even in the countries that are, local variations can be found in various places scattered throughout the UN. There is also a set of unspoken rules that are understood by drivers universally.

The most obvious example of these unspoken rules is that drivers are generally expected to avoid crashing into other vehicles and pedestrians, regardless of whether or not the law allows the other vehicle or pedestrian to be where they are.

There are traffic lights and signs which need to be adhered to at all times as well as the written and unwritten sets of rules. Police officers are somtimes used instead of traffic lights and signs in heavily,...

Why are we so conscious of the car we drive

Whilst motorists in other countries do attach importance to the type of car they drive, in the UK the car appears to be of far more importance, even in some cases more important that the type of house someone lives in. Britain sells on average 2,500,000 cars per year and the contract hire and leasing industry has been built as a result of the British motorist acquiring a new car with such frequency.

So what happened? How did motoring habits change over the years without the British motorist realizing it? In the 1950’s motorcars like everything else were built to last, people bought products such as cars, ovens and fridges and expected them to last a lifetime and they usually did.

The cars built today, although they have a lot more safety features, are really quite flimsy compared with the cars of the Fifties; then they were heavy and solid. Nowadays a dented wing can be pulled out with a suction pad, in the fifties getting a dent out, was more like a Blacksmith’s job.

In Britain at this time, Americans were know for being wasteful, apparently buying things that they did not really need, only to throw them away after a few years. This was a concept that was difficult for the British to grasp, when during the war they had learned not,...

Diesel Engines

Because of skyrocketing gas prices at the pumps, many people with cars that run on unleaded fuel are looking for alternatives to lower their expenses. Diesel-engine is gaining popularity around the world. With diesel-engine cars, people are able to save more money because diesel fuel is very cheap.

How was the diesel engine invented? It was invented by Rudolf Diesel, who was born in Paris to Bavarian immigrants. He graduated from Munich Polytechnic and worked as an engineer. On February 27, 1892, he filed for a patent that covered the design of the internal combustion engine that he designed. The patent was granted within a year. His patent was also granted in 1898 in the United States.

Since then, more improvements have been made in the technology of diesel engines. In the 1920s, an innovative design for an injection pump was invented by Robert Bosch. The high demand for his invention prompted Bosch to make business with various companies in different countries all over the world to manufacture his injection pumps.

Demand for diesel engines continued to rise because of the increased efficiency they had compared to other engines of that time. The technology was also developed further and put into more applications. On January 6, 1930, the first road trip using a car running on a diesel engine was completed. This trip spanned almost 1300 km, which showed everyone the efficiency and limitless applications of diesel engines. Diesel also found its way into the world of car racing. In 1931, the Cummins Diesel Special, a car running on a diesel engine, completed the Indy 500 without ever needing a pit stop. That was the first time in history that had happened.

Today, diesel engines are the major driving forces behind many industries. They can be found everywhere, in cars, ships, trains, and other machines. In addition...
